However, due to the presence of some stability and performance issues, as well as a few noticeably lacking features, SimCity 4 doesn't seem as polished as it could have been. On the other hand, it's still a complex and detailed strategy game that can entertain you for hours on end and even teach you a thing or two.

The first of the highly scrutinized "Quake killers" to hit the shelves, Hexen II delivers a mighty blow, but ultimately fails to knock the king off his throne. Make no mistake: Hexen II is a game with many strengths - its design is superior to the original Hexen, it has a significant payoff for single players winding through its twisted corridors, and visually it is without equal in the action genre. But the game's attempt to break from the standard first-person shooter mold has some nasty side effects, and the end result is a confusing and often frustratingly difficult experience.

You choose your character from one of four character classes - assassin, necromancer, crusader and paladin - and set out on a quest to destroy the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Following their demise, you must combat the third Serpent Rider, Eidolon (his two siblings having been vanquished in Heretic and Hexen). There's a thread of a story tying the whole premise together, but it really just serves as a means of dropping you into the lush, graphically rich environments. Which isn't necessarily a criticism - the environments are the best thing about Hexen II, especially when playing the GL version. You'll explore five beautifully texture-mapped realms - a medieval village, a Meso-American temple, an Egyptian tomb, a Greco-Roman palace, and a gloomy cathedral. The visual detail - with tiled mosaics at the bottoms of pools and hieroglyphics on the walls of tombs - is like nothing ever seen in the action genre. In fact, it is not an overstatement to say that Hexen II is one of the most beautiful games ever made.

It might be difficult to get excited about yet another World War II shooter on the PC, especially since there are already a bunch of great, similarly themed shooters already available. Call of Duty 2, Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood, and Day of Defeat all came out within the last few months, they’re all great, and they’re all about World War II. Despite its bad timing, worn-out source material, and lack of exposure, Namco and Rebellion’s recent stab at the genre still does a lot to distinguish itself as a competent and thoughtfully designed shooter. Sniper Elite takes a different approach to the concept of storming beaches and mowing down Nazis. As the title implies, this is a game about being a sniper, and it requires a more methodical approach than simply popping a hot one in anyone wearing the wrong color uniform. That said, Sniper Elite does require a lot of patience, but dedicated marksmen will get a lot of satisfaction from the lengthy and challenging campaign.

Prey is a first-person shooter in which players take on the role of a character who must fight against multiple alien races.

Prey is an easy ride through an alien world that doesn't cash in on all its potential but still offers enough thrills to make it a worthwhile trip.

Prey opens with the main character yelling at himself in a bathroom mirror. Tommy, a Cherokee Indian, doesn't really care about his heritage and wants to take his girlfriend, Jen, and leave the reservation. But before he can muster up the courage to convince her to leave (and just after he bashes in the skulls of a couple of morons causing trouble in her bar), an alien invasion sucks Tommy, his grandfather, and Jen up into some sort of spacecraft. With the help of some unknown benefactors, Tommy manages to get free and you set out on your quest to rescue your girlfriend and, of course, save Earth in the process. There are a few plot twists here and there, but some of those twists feel like they've been lifted directly from other games.

Only on a Disney-designed racetrack would collecting Lucky Fairies and launching acorns lead players to the trophy. This whimsical, Windows-only racing game is set in Disney World, where Chip n' Dale manage to drop some of those darned acorns into the Fireworks Machine, causing it to explode and scatter bits of itself all over the park. The two decide to race around the park to find the machine parts before night falls and the fireworks show must begin. Every track represents an attraction at Disney World, and winning on each track allows players to advance and yields an all-important Fireworks Machine part for the rebuilding project.
Single players or duos may play this game, choosing to race as one of 13 characters. The only recognizable ones are from Disney's B-team: Chip, Dale, and Jiminy Cricket. The rest appear to be created for this game: Tiara Damage, Moe Whiplash, and Baron Karlott are cleverly named, but we wonder why Disney decided not to put Mickey, or at least Pumbaa, in some of these vehicles. A gamepad is optional, but is a nice alternative to the keyboard operation, which requires players to use directional arrows while simultaneously pressing numbers for gas, brakes, power-ups, jumps, and slides.

The 13 racetracks, which range from the Haunted Mansion to the Rock 'n Roller Coaster, are chock full of Disneyesque hazards and humor: hitchhiking ghosts, farm animals chewing explosives, roaming dinosaurs. Anyone who's been to Disney World will love revisiting the attractions in their new racetrack format: racing on this CD-ROM's Tomorrowland Speedway is an ironic joyride for anyone who putted along at 2 mph on the original, actual Tomorrowland Speedway.

This good-natured racing game is gentle and entertaining enough for younger kids, and experienced speedsters will appreciate it as well, since the only way to progress is to win first place on each track. Disney's grit-and-grease-free racing style might just be a bit too tame for the true gearheads: it just doesn't feel manly to lob Teacup Mines at one's opponents.

It was time when you were happy, with your woman. But she left this mortal plane, and you lost your lust for life. Now, you’re something between life and death, and you don’t care, slowly recalling your memories from time to time… *whoosh*, a lightning bolt strikes your chains, and you lift your face up. The story then began… A glowing light brings you here, into the castle, well guarded, but too weak to send any men out to fight. Game is much alike to Westwood Studio’s Nox, and Blizzard’s Diablo in a way of playing: it is an action game with RPG elements. The Inner Sphere is launching a counterattack on the Clans, and the Smoke Jaguars is the first target! Operation Democles will attack the planet Tranquil. As Connor Sinclair, you’re leading the Democles Commando team lance, part of the Eridani Light Horse, on the attack. The op went terribly wrong when one of the two drop ships was hit during descent, and your lancemates have been scattered to the four winds in the frenzied drop. You must attack through Clan territory, meet up with your lancemates, remove any resistance in your path, and try to find a way off the planet, while also accomplishing what you came to do: destroy the Smoke Jaguars!

MW3 features very detailed mechs (they limp when legs are hit, and destroyed limbs spark and trail wreckage) with slow and ponderous movements, as 100 ton mechs should. Firepower and precise application are the key in winning your engagements. Plenty of mechs are available. You start in a 55-ton Bushwhacker and work you way up to the really heavy stuff in a 20-mission campaign (which is quite short). Full multiplayer is supported with Internet play at Microsoft Zone. Your MFB has limited capacity so you’ll need to decide what supplies to keep or dump for your salvage. You’ll need to track ammo, weapons, equipment (like heatsinks), and the mechs. Keep the MFB safe or you’ll have even LESS room! Redesign mechs to utilize newly captured weapons or adapt to the changing ammo situation. The AI is rather dumb as it relies on trigger points. As low as you avoid the trigger, the game is simply a matter of killing one set of enemy mechs at one time, repair, repeat. The occasional escort or chase missions are challenging, but not terribly so. This is a improvement over MW2, and is recommended.

In this first-person shooter, “Chrome” is a valued resource that many corporations wish to control. The Valkyria System, where Chrome is located, is a recently discovered solar system of five planets that is now being colonized. Players take the role of Logan; a former elite soldier turned bounty hunter. Having been betrayed by the military, Logan now lends his skills to those who can afford them.

Logan can approach more than 14 levels in a number of ways that are dependent on implants, which give him the ability to turn into a stealth master or a battle machine. More implants are earned as the game progresses, and players will also have more than 18 weapons at their disposal, such as machine guns, rocket launchers, and plasma rifles. There are also eight vehicles available with which to explore the five planets of the Valkyria System.

Chrome features five multiplayer modes as well: Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Assault, Team Deathmatch, and Team Domination. With support for up to 32 players, the multiplayer modes include all of the single-player game’s weapons, vehicles, and implants.

Activision has taken a new direction in the Zork series with the development of Zork Nemesis (also known as Zork Nemesis: The Forbidden Lands). Although Zork Nemesis is billed as a sequel to Return to Zork, the story in this game bears no authentic link to previous Zork titles except for a few passing references. Such a risk taken by the developer is likely going to stir up mixed feelings from diehard Zork fans. To gamers who are unfamiliar with the Zork series, Zork Nemesis stands well by itself as an adventure game that commands a welcomed challenge. For the first time, the grandiose view of the Zork Empire can be fully visualized inside the game, bringing scenes which once can only be described in text in the original adventures to a new level of experience. Together with a hefty dose of challenging puzzles, Zork Nemesis represents a dark side of the Zork universe that any gamer is surely enticed to experience.

The story of Zork Nemesis centers around 4 prominent Alchemists in the Zork Empire who have been kidnapped by a mysterious figure from the Forbidden Lands known as the Nemesis. Your predecessor, Agent Bivotar, has succumbed to the Nemesis’ curse in an attempt to investigate their disappearances. Searching through the deserted Temple of Agrippa, you soon realize that they have been murdered and that the captives have been previously researching together to control a power known as the Quintessentia, so called Philosopher’s Stone, that is supposed to grant them immortality and unlimited powers. Guided by the Alchemists’ spirits, you set off to retrieve the 4 elements and 4 metals that are needed to resurrect their bodies. However, when the sorrow tale of a pair of lovers named Alexandria and Lucien is unveiled, you discover a darker secret behind the Alchemists’ evil doings. The line between good and evil is finally blurred when the truths are revealed on the identity of the Nemesis and his quarrel with the Alchemists.

Zork Nemesis features a number of new innovations with its MADE engine to help bring the great Zork Empire to life. Z-Vision Surround Technology allows for true 360° movement left to right, and at times up and down, within the game in stunning 16-bit graphics. These panoramic views are interleaved with pre-rendered Full Motion Videos clips, compressed using Duck Corporation’s TrueMotion, to provide realistic transitional effects when traveling between locales. QSound technology is employed to emulate 3D sound effect by shifting a single speaker channel back and forth as the player moves about inside the game environment. Surrealistic sound effect mix, provided by the Academy award winning Soundelux Media Labs, completes the illusion of immersion. Over an hour of live action videos have been shot that are directed by Joe Napolitano (The X-Files, Murder One) for this game. The Windows 95 version contains an optional online component and a rollover bar within the game to access system commands. In addition, DirectX support in this version allows for simplified setup and significant performance improvement over the MS-DOS version. Subtitle display within the game is available through an upgrade patch. Both versions of the game come on 3 CDs.

Gameplay in Zork Nemesis unfolds over 5 richly detailed worlds—Agrippa, Asylum, Castle, Conservatory, and Monastery. Except for the occasional passing references to previous Zork titles such as Dimwit Flathead the Excessive and Flood Control Dam #3 (and a grue, of course), the general atmosphere of this game is eerie and serious—a dramatic change in both tone and style from the classics. Still, there are the occasional Zorkian innuendo hidden in references and character names such as “Venusnv” (pronounced as “penis envy”). The puzzles in this game are all well integrated into the story. Most are inventory based, but some are logic oriented. There are over 65 puzzles in the game that provide over 40 hours of gameplay.

Zork Nemesis breaks many new grounds as an adventure game. The story is dark and gripping, with numerous subplots and twists that are heightened by a surprise climactic revelation. Character developments are complex, and the portrayals of the dark side of mankind in these characters are chilling. The acting performances are also strong. All of the Full Motion Videos are tastefully done and used selectively to propel the story forward.

On the other hand, Zork Nemesis has a few distracting annoyances. Fans of the Zork series who are expecting ample Zorkian humor may not identify with this title. The virtual environment can be disorientating at times, making navigation within the game a challenge. The later puzzles in the game are quite difficult, and certain puzzles contain much gore and blood that may be offensive to some players. There is even a puzzle that requires the player to behead a corpse with a guillotine and then place the head on a contraption in order to make it speak!

Overall, Zork Nemesis is a dark interpretation of the classic Zork universe. It is an adventure that can be appreciated by both fans and non fans of the series. With this game, the great Underground Empire has once again been rediscovered in its full glory.

Following the time-honored Starcraft school of RTS design, Dark Planet features three very different races. There are the Terrans and the Zerg, except here they’re called the Colonists and the Dreil. There are also the Sorin, a society of samurai lizards. These races are nicely differentiated, with separate resource requirements, distinct artwork, and entirely unique units and special abilities. There are four resources on the map, but some of them are unnecessary for some races. For instance, the Sorin have no use for crystal, but the Colonists and Dreil will have to compete for it. In addition to two basic resources for building structures and units, each race has a third resource that powers research, spell abilities, and advanced buildings. The Colonists get this by gathering energy from thermal vents, and the Sorin get it by stationing their worker units at an altar to pray. But the Dreil can get it only by attacking enemy units with spitting bugs that wrap their victims in cocoons. The cocoons then have to be carried back to base with special beetles. This forces the Dreil to be aggressive if they want to develop their more advanced units and technologies. This game has a better replay value then Star Crat and other RTS games.

In this sequel to 2001’s Schizm, your character, Sen, awakens from cryogenic stasis aboard a dilapidated space station. A holographic recording reveals to the amnesiac Sen that he has been in a deep sleep for 214 years as punishment for supposedly betraying his people and destroying most of his world. Sen also learns that it’s only a matter of days before the station’s orbit decays, sending it crashing to the planet below. Unlike in so many games, the story here was penned by a professional author, science fiction writer Terry Dowling. Mysterious Journey II is powered by the Jupiter engine used in Monolith’s No One Lives Forever 2 and Tron 2.0. This means the graphics rise far above those in many adventure games on a technical level.
