Among fans of Dick Wolf's Law & Order television empire, the hierarchy of shows goes something like this: Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, then Law & Order: Criminal Intent (and the less said about Law & Order: Trial By Jury, the better). Legacy Interactive has already churned out a number of PC adventure games based on the original series, the last two actually being thoroughly competent games despite being largely targeted at the most casual of audiences. For its latest Law & Order game, Legacy opted to skip the obvious choice of creating a Special Victims Unit game, and went straight to Criminal Intent. OK, that's fine. After all, the show's more psychological nature could have easily lent itself to a more intriguing brand of investigation. However, any notion of that goes flying out the window mere minutes into any of Law & Order: Criminal Intent's assorted murder cases. The clunky interface, leaden pacing, mostly ugly visuals, and host of irritating and detrimental bugs pretty much squash whatever potential this game might have had, and set the Law & Order game franchise back about three years.

The oddball puzzles are forgivable because they do add some real challenge to the proceedings. Few other things about Criminal Intent get such a pass. One of the biggest overall changes to the formula is the new third-person cinematic perspective. You no longer view the game from the first-person. You see D'Onofrio's Detective Bobby Goren character, and by pointing and clicking the mouse, Goren will walk to wherever you tell him to...eventually. Goren isn't exactly spry, so he tends to take an overly long time getting from place to place--a fact made all the more obnoxious by the copious amount of backtracking and wandering you'll end up doing throughout the game. Every time you travel to a location, you always start out in a neutral spot that's typically bereft of useful clues or objects. If you end up going back to that location later to find an obscure piece of evidence, you'll have to start back at that spot, and spend the time making Goren walk back up the stairs, or down a long hallway, or whatever it takes. Realistic, sure, but it kills the pace of the game and makes repeat trips an irritating chore. And this is all assuming that Goren will actually walk where you tell him to, walk to a spot that doesn't block your cursor from selecting a piece of evidence, or will not get stuck walking in one place, forcing you to reboot the game. And that's not a safe assumption.

Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories
Liberty City Stories tells the tale of one Toni Cipriani, a regular-type mob guy who did a good deed for the head of the Leone crime family, Salvatore Leone. Toni had to go away for awhile, but the heat’s died down, and he’s back on the job in Liberty City, maintaining his loyalty to Sal while wiping out the family’s enemies in droves along the way. As you ascend to become Salvatore’s right-hand man, you’ll start and finish gang wars with other mafia types, a few triads, the yakuza…pretty much all of the usual suspects are present.

If you’re familiar with the various mafia presences over the course of the past three GTA games, you’ll recognize a few of the names and faces here. But the story stands alone and doesn’t require you to remember the various cast members. That’s a good thing, because the mafia characters in the other GTA games have been largely forgettable. The game’s storyline really isn’t up to par with the console installments in the series, because very little actually happens. Even potential plot points are squandered, like when Toni finally becomes a made man but a bad cutscene doesn’t actually show the ceremony. The game’s mission path doesn’t deviate into crazy territory, and most of the characters are fairly lifeless. There are no enigmatic weirdos like Truth, the crazy hippie from San Andreas, or Steve Scott, the porno director from Vice City, to break up the heavier-handed mafia tasks. This dulls the game’s personality, preventing its characters and events from becoming as memorable as we’ve come to expect from GTA games and their excellent storylines.

If you stick to the missions and don’t mess around too much, you can finish the game’s story mode in 10 to 12 hours. But the deceptive game-progress counter will only report around 40 percent completion if you stick close to the missions and don’t do much else. The game has some rampage side missions and the standard pizza delivery, vigilante, taxi service, and ambulance missions, too. You can seek out ringing pay phones to get into street races. You can report to car lots to sell cars or motorcycles by test-driving vehicles for prospective consumers. And, of course, there are 100 hidden packages to find. If you get into all this optional stuff, there’s a lot more city to see, and plenty of different cars to see it in.

The Settlers II: 10th Anniversary iSO

For a long time, the Romans were happy. They had everything. Wealth, women and health. But one day, they were struck by many catastrophes at once. First their women where gone and then hell broke loose. A drought came and the animals died in agony because of the heat, then swarms of grasshoppers came down from the sky and ate, what was left from the crop and to top it all, the nearby volcano broke out. With nothing else left to do, the Romans put everything and everyone who was left on ships and sailed away. But still luck wasn't on their side and they soon hit a storm. After the storm was over, no ship was left but a few survivors found themselves on an island, much like their homeland and they began their search for a new home and their woman.

Since this game is a remake of the original The Settlers 2: Veni, Vidi, Vici, the core of the game remains the same. Your goal in the campaign is still to reach the portal in every of the 10 missions. To do so, you've to build a working economic system to provide for your settlers and to expand your little empire and fight the enemies which are in your way.
